A peptide is a short chain of amino acids linked together, generally shorter than a protein. Some peptides occur naturally in the human body as hormones, some are made into medications approved by the FDA, and some are sold as research or compounded substances with little or no published human evidence behind them. "Peptide" describes a chemical structure, not a single product category or an assurance of safety or legality.

What the research and guidance actually say

Chemically, a peptide is defined by its size: a chain of two or more amino acids joined by peptide bonds, generally distinguished from a protein once the chain exceeds roughly 50 amino acids, though the cutoff is not exact (National Center for Biotechnology Information). Within that definition sit very different regulatory realities.
