What it is
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide made up of 15 amino acids, derived from a fragment of a protein naturally present in human gastric juice. It is not an approved pharmaceutical drug and it is not a dietary supplement ingredient under US law. In the United States, BPC-157 appears on the FDA's Category 2 list of bulk drug substances that present significant safety risks, a category that generally blocks 503A compounding pharmacies from preparing it for patients (see the Regulatory status section below). It is most often discussed online in the context of connective-tissue and recovery research, a framing that comes from animal studies rather than from any approved human indication.
How it is studied
Published research on BPC-157 is concentrated in rodent and cell-culture models, examining tendon, ligament, muscle, and gut-lining tissue (Sikiric et al., 2018, Current Pharmaceutical Design). Some of the earliest lab work dates to the 1990s and 2000s, largely from a single research group based in Croatia, which limits how much the existing literature has been independently replicated by other labs. Researchers have looked at proposed mechanisms involving blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) and growth factor signaling in these animal models. As of this update, no large, controlled human clinical trial results have been published in a peer-reviewed journal indexed on PubMed. Case reports and small human case series exist, but the evidence base for humans remains described by researchers themselves as preliminary.
What the research looks at
The animal literature has explored BPC-157 in connection with tendon and ligament injury models, gastrointestinal tissue, and some cardiovascular and neurological markers in rodents. Researchers frame these as areas of investigation, not established effects. Human extrapolation from animal-only data carries real limits: dosing, absorption, and metabolism can differ substantially between species, which is one reason regulatory bodies have not moved to approve BPC-157 for any human indication.

compounding, meaning the agency identified significant safety risks and generally does

Safety signals reported
Reported safety data in humans is limited, largely because controlled human trials are scarce. Case reports and compounding-pharmacy adverse event reports have raised concerns that led the FDA to flag it as a significant safety risk in the first place, which is distinct from a specific, well-characterized side-effect profile.
